Nizamapatnam is about 50 km from chirala railway station. The nizam of Hyderabad had chosen this remote coastal village for the development of a port two centuries ago, which was named after him. The port picked up links with all ports from rangoon to trincomalee. It provided facility to embark / disembark the passengers ferries bound for Rangoon.
A masonry column 6m high was built on the shore to place a lamp in 1860. it was painted white . this was replaced by a 10m high masonry tower in 1890 and a wick lamp of higher luminous intensity in a a 6th order optic was placed on the tower . in 1930 a DA gas burner  and flasher with red filter was installed in place of wick lamp.
The port was closed during world war II and the light remained out of operation. After the war, only the fishing activites were resumed while other port activites were shifted to machilipatnam port. The light started functioning in 1958 but broke down after ten years.
Towards the end of 20th century the port was received and it was necessary to provide a powerful light at Nizamapatnam . the construction of 30 m high RCC lighthouse tower provide a powerful taken up in april 2004 and completed in June 2004 with slip form technique . the revolving equipment supplied by M/s Ana Navigational Aids Ltd, New Delhi, working on Batteries charged by solar energy / mains supply was installed on the tower. The lighthouse was commissioned inJuly 2004.
