Machilipatnam is an important port in the region since period . the port is connected to national rail network. Marcopoloin his travelogue written in 1293 AD, has mentioned about the prosperity of the region were under kakatiyas of warangal in the 13th century. Vijiayanagar rularsocuppied the region and retained their control for over two centuries followed by muslim rule. Then the region became part of madras presidency in the early 19th century under the British and after the independence it formed part of andra Pradesh in 1956.
A lighted beacon was first established in 1858 on the coast , north of the entrance to Macilipatnam creek.
