The lighthouse is standing on the hill range known as Yarada Konda and the portion of the lighthouse site is known as Dolphin’s Nose overlooking ythe entrance to Visakhapatnam Harbour. Visakhapatnam is a natural Harbour in the back waters formed by Meghadri River and hills around. It is also the East Coast base of the Indian Navy.

A flag staff was raised on the fort on the eastern banks in 1902 for hoisting atorn warning signals. A light was later placed on a 15m circular mansonry tower raised close to the flag mast. This was the first lighted beacon in the region followed by break water lights in 1932. A beacon was provided near the present lighthouse site in 1940 that remained in service up to June 1957 when the new Lighthouse with electrical light equipment supplied by M/s. B.B.T.,Paris was commissioned. The incandescent light Source 3000W 100V was replaced by 400W 230V Metal Halide lamp in july 1997 which was modified to a cluster of three 150W 230V Metal Halide lamps in March 2004.

The Radio Beacon Equipment supplied by M/s Nippon, Japan was installed at the station which became operational in March 1961. This was replaced by the equipment supplied by M/s MACE, Visakhapatnam in January 1991. station was changed over to DGPS with the DGPS equipment of M/s Leica Geo Systems, USA make in August 1998. the transmitters were replaced by Southern Avionics Co, USA make 500W transmitters in March 2004.
