Pamban, situated on rameswaram Island is a railway station on madurai-rameswaram line. the lighthouse is about two km from the railway station . the region waas part of madras presidency prior to independence. The lighthouse is an important land mark for the vessels crossing the pamban , below the railway bridge from west to palk strait on the east. The lighthouse stands on sand hillock at the north west point of rameswaram island.
A circular masonry column was first built in 1864 and wick lamp was placed on it. The present tower was constructed in 1901 and a wick lamp with high intensity burner and 4th order optic, supplied by M/s Chance Bros ,Brimingham, was installed. It was s group occulting light. The equipment underwent alteration in 1923 with the introduction of revolving system and a lantern house,supplied by M/s chance bros ,Birmingham. This was replaced in 1987 by 300mm drum optic of BBT make and DA sun valve.
The lighthouse which was earlier under the tamil nadu maritime Board was transferred ti the dept lighthouse & lightships in march 2004. the light source and DA gas flasher was replaced by 250W 230V halogen lamp with electronic flasher in march 2004 itself.
